The latest addition from Mercedes AMG becomes the pinnacle of the illustrious S-class range, we welcome the S65 AMG.

Combining the height of luxury with an abundance of power, the S65 promises to offer an exhilarating experience. Some will question what the point of it is, it was only recently we were getting very excited about the new S63 AMG. The answer lies in the form of a very juicy 6.0L twin-turbo V12 engine which produces a mouth-watering 621bhp.

It means that the S65 storms to 62mph from standstill in just 4.3 seconds and the torque figure is a full 100Nm higher than the S63 – numbers which are sure to please the petrolheads among us. The S65 features a seven-speed Speedshift automatic gearbox which can be set to efficiency, sport or manual mode; each mode offers a different type of ride to ensure both driver and passenger travel in maximum comfort.

In terms of bodywork, there are a number of changes which set the S65 apart from the S63; the most obvious of these is a brand new 12-spoke grill and the new air intakes, which are beautifully carved from chrome mesh.

There are also pleasantries to be found in the interior, such as the 21cm-wide head-up display that opens the telephone, radio and sat nav – the first of its kind to feature on any models in the S-Class fleet. As well as a Burmester stereo, massage leather seats and stainless steel door panels, which make being a passenger just as enjoyable as getting behind the wheel, owners can also choose from a host of optional extras, like full-pile floormats, a 360° camera and even more speakers – all of which come at an extra cost to the estimate base price of £170,000.

With all this in mind, the S65 AMG looks to encapsulate the sophistication, elegance and outstanding performance Mercedes Benz have provided for years; it’s sure to cause quite a stir when it becomes available in April 2014.
