The 10 Best Things About The Audi RS6 Avant
The Audi RS6, it’s the estate car that can keep up with most supercars and its very much a favourite here at Romans International for both our staff and our customers. We know the RS6 is about to be replaced by a new RS6, so we thought it would be a good time to remind ourselves what’s so great about the current RS6 and what are the 10 best things about this model.
10: Running Costs
Number 10 on our list, is the running costs. We are not going to say that this is the cheapest car in the world to run because it’s not; but when you compare it to cars of similar performance, running costs are definitely a positive on this car. With regards to servicing, it should be done every year and the car is available with long life service schedules. It will cost you £500 a year for servicing. Being a V8 engine, you also need to consider fuel costs. Every V8 is going to be thirsty especially being a twin-turbo but however, one of the interesting features on this engine is the “On Cylinder Demand”. This feature means when you are in the city or when you are driving quite slowly, it shuts off four of the cylinders which helps with fuel economy.
In terms of depreciation, it’s not depreciation proof. If you buy a car brand new at list price, you are going to lose a fair chunk of money but if you are buying a used one, a year or two years old; they do hold their money very well. They have strong residuals which is a positive bearing in mind the running costs.
9: Build Quality
Audi as a brand has a fantastic reputation as one of the more reliable sports cars manufacturers. This is German engineering at it’s best. The Germans know how to build cars, better than us Brits and Italians. The RS6 is a very robust and durable car. They use high-quality materials on the interior. For example, on the seats you’ve got this lovely Leather and Alcantara with blue honeycomb stitching. Furthermore, you’ve got Carbon Fibre with a blue weave which is especially made for this model. Moreover, you’ve got all the fantastic infotainment and navigation which is very intuitive. Even though, some may argue that it’s a little dated now, it is still very good as everything works as expected.
We do sell a lot of RS6’s and it’s very rare that any cars come back with problems. They are very reliable, especially the engine. This is the same engine they use in many of the VW groups cars, including the old Bentley GT V8, Panamera Turbo and they even use a derivative of it in the Lamborghini Urus. So this is a tried and tested formula and it’s definitely a car you can rely on.
8: Technology
The Audi RS6 Avant Performance comes with plenty of fantastic technological features. There’s an incredible array standard features you can get and a lot of options you can handpick. There’s far too many to go through each one individually, so we are going to handpick a few of the best features. The first stand out feature is the LED Matrix Headlights. How it works is that they’ve got built-in cameras which basically detects any road users that are ahead and then they individually drop some of the LEDs in order to not dazzle the car ahead but still keep the road really well illuminated. It also manages to talk to the navigation system, gets the data so that it can pre-empt the corners and then adjust the LEDs to look around the bends. A pretty cool feature.
There’s an incredible amount of fantastic safety features and one of them is called Rest Recommendation System which comes as standard. How it works is that the car will tell you when to take a rest just based on how you are driving and changing your driving patterns. Another feature you can get is called the Assistance Package which gives you Adaptive Cruise Control Stop & Go which means it will break and accelerate for you and keep the optimum space behind the car in front. The RS6 also has Audi Lane Assist that notifies you when you are swerving into the wrong lane. Another highlight safety feature is the Blind Spot Assist.
Other brilliant technological features include the Head-Up Display, Surround View and Wireless Phone Charging so it’s incredible to think how the new RS6 is going to upgrade from this because this is still an excellent package.
7: Comfort
Comfort makes it to our seventh spot as one of the best things about the Audi RS6 Performance. Starting off with the seats; there’s far too many performance cars these days where you spend more than an hour in the car and you get out holding your back and we can assure you it’s not going to happen with the seats in the RS6. This is because it comes with the RS Super Sport Seats. They are heated and electrically adjustable in multiple ways but most importantly they are very comfortable. It doesn’t matter if you are a skinny or big guy, you are going to fit in these. They hug you as you go around corners, great for long journeys with ample space in the back for passengers which makes it a great car to be sat in.
6: Exterior Styling
It’s safe to say the RS6 has aged remarkably well bearing in mind this shape came out in 2013. The Performance version came in 2016 but didn’t have any drastic styling changes. One of the things they did change was the new V Spoke Star Design Gloss Anthracite Black Alloy Wheels. It was very much a case of if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
What doesn’t change is that the RS6 is meant to be a very understated car. This might not be the most understated colour, but it still has a menacing front-end. The thing that people like about the RS6 Performance is the stance. The way it sits, it’s manly and eager but not too aggressive and flashy. You get assuring nods of appreciation rather than hand in your mouth moments. The RS6 Avant Performance is a driver’s car, an enthusiast’s car but it’s understated and not in peoples faces which is one of the best things about it.
5: Noise
With a V8 Twin-Turbo engine, the RS6 is one of the greatest sounding cars! On the Performance version you get the Sports Exhaust as standard and we adore the aggressive big oval shaped exhaust pipes. The great thing about the RS6 is you can just switch it into comfort mode and it becomes quiet and unobtrusive but at the flick of a switch into Dynamic mode and it really awakens the beast.
4: Carrying Capacity
One of the biggest reasons why people buy an Audi RS6 is the carrying capacity. As fantastic as it would be to be driving two seat supercars; a lot of people have families, luggage, dogs, bikes and even caravans and the RS6 can handle it all. The car comes with five seats with plenty of room in the back for the family and one of the biggest benefits of buying an estate car is that you get a massive boot. There’s plenty of space for a few dogs or lots of luggage. Another feature you will notice on an RS6 is the roof racks which you could use to put canoes, skies, bikes and plenty of other things so the RS6 is a car you want to take on an adventure. You can spec for the optional tow bar which is perfect if you have a caravan. The RS6 has plenty of torque and pulling power that will make it tow anything you want on the back.
3: Quattro
Quattro – The legendary all wheel drive system that dominated the world rally championship. This is a system that Audi’s rivals saw the benefit of and have now replicated with BMW now offering xDrive and Mercedes offering 4Matic. The RS6 blazed the trail within its sector with incredible grip and stability in all weather conditions hence the new Mercedes AMG E63 S Estate and BMW M5 are now all wheel drive as they were previously rear wheel drive. With the Quattro system, the RS6 increases driver confidence and makes the driver feel safe behind the wheel whether it’s on ice, rain, loose gravel; it takes it all in its stride. This is one of the best things about the RS6, that you can drive it all year round in any road conditions and it makes you feel very assured behind the wheel.
2: Performance
It’s all well and good having an industry leading Quattro all-wheel drive system coupled with fantastic looks, great safety and technological features but you need the performance to match. The reason you buy the RS6 over an Audi A6 or S6 is because of the performance of the RS6’s V8 engine. With 597 bhp, the RS6 Performance has plenty of power and if you are a real petrol head or driving enthusiast, you want this outstanding performance. As standard the RS6 does 155 mph but if you get the Dynamic Pack it de-restricts it to 174 mph. In addition, if you specify the Dynamic Plus Pack which includes the Carbon Ceramic Brakes; it increases the top speed to an astonishing 189 mph. In terms of acceleration, the RS6 Performance goes from 0-62 mph in just 3.7 seconds which is an impressive feat bearing in mind that this is a 2.7 tonne car. The RS6 Performance is incredibly fast, its got outstanding performance and quite frankly that is definitely one of the very best things about it.
1: The Perfect All-Rounder
So what is the very best thing about the Audi RS6 Performance? We’ve discussed this at length at Romans, we’ve even spoken to quite a few RS6 owners to ask them what their opinion was and pretty much everyone came up with a similar answer. It’s the fact that everything we have mentioned is rolled into one package. It’s the ultimate all-rounder with three cars rolled into one, it’s performance mixed with practicality, it’s the understated looks mixed with a monstrous V8, it’s a daily driver you can use in all weather conditions all year round and take it on any adventure. So, the very best thing about the Audi RS6 is that it’s everything combined into one car.
