The Next Generation of Porsche Cars: 918 Spyder
Ever since Porsche unveiled the 918 Spyder, a hybrid electric concept supercar, at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010 there has been much excitement.
The Stuttgart based manufacturer of luxury cars has now confirmed they will be producing the 918 Spyder, and although the production date has not been suggested yet, it is expected to be available possibly by 2013.
The Porsche 918 Spyder is like no other Porsche, it is a mid-engined sports car powered by a 3.4 litre V8 engine, producing 500hp, and features three electric motors which deliver an additional 218hp. This plug-in hybrid car utilizes technology developed and seen on the racing track in the 911 GT3 R Hybrid.
The 918 Spyder will also feature a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission; the performance figures are impressive, with a 0-62mph time of just under 3.2 seconds and a top speed of just over 200 mph. Additional to the plug-in recharge system, the batteries can also be charged by a regenerative braking system and also by ‘excess output’ from the engine when the 918 Spyder is simply coasting.
