Increased thickness in the aluminium chassis members is needed to compensate for the loss in torsional rigidity and keep those agile handling characteristics. This does add weight to a degree, but the V8 Volante manages to weigh in it at no more than the V12 Coupe variant overall, a rather impressive feat from the boys down at Gaydon. An all-new 'K-Fold' roof system manages a 14 second opening time up to 31mph, much faster and lighter than the DB9 mechanism it replaces. A multi-layered fabric roof combined with laminated glass all round gives the DB11 Volante supreme cabin noise qualities. Whilst the hugely improved infotainment and turbocharged engine are clear signs of Mercedes influence, however it is the aggressively modern new design and the quality of the British made interior which really catch the eye. Very much a GT car Aston have managed to make the DB11 noticeably more spacious and practical than the DB9, especially noticeable in the boot department of this Volante where it manages to be 20% larger than the equivalent DB9. The new Skyhook adaptive damping system provides fantastic ride control and this along with the smooth delivery of the V8 is what DB11 owners will grow to truly appreciate.
