For years Ferrari have displayed their combustion engine talent with their range of V12 and V8 engines but we are entering a new era of electrification and the 296 GTB saw the return of the V6 and with an electric motor it became the third Ferrari to feature a hybrid powertrain after the SF90 and the LaFerrari. The combined power output of the hybrid engine and turbocharged V6 is a monstrous 819bhp which is delivered to the rear wheels but with this shorter wheelbase chassis that Ferrari have created for the 296 is why it's widely being referred to as a masterpiece and a supercar which rewrites the rulebook.
This new hybrid technology is encompassed in a sleek and compact body, with styling cues that deviate from the typical modern-day Ferrari design. A ring-shaped flying buttress houses the engine compartment cover which is formed of a single 3D glass component. The rear arches are high and wide, harking back to the Ferraris of old but it's the mind-blowing performance which is getting all the plaudits. Whilst hybrid-assisted performance can often be associated with straight line speed and ridiculous acceleration, the 296 is being praised for having so much more than this. It's the soundtrack, the handling and how engaging the car is to drive which is getting enthusiasts and journalists so excited about this car and rightly so. It's a new era for Ferrari but the 296 shows that we are in very good hands indeed.

WHAT THE JOURNALISTS SAY
- The 296 GTB really does blow apart the current supercar conventions.
- A big step forward: electricity used to add depth and dimension to the supercar. McLaren will have sleepless nights.
- Benign and adaptable but also wildly quick and expressive, the Ferrari 296 GTB is spectacular to drive and the V6 also sounds stunning. It is usable yet oh so special and its clear manner belies its complexity. Ferrari continues to set the standard.
