Named after the picturesque and glamorous fishing village located on the Italian Riviera, the Portofino is Ferrari’s 2+2 hard top convertible which replaced the hugely successful California. Now updated and in its ‘M’ form – standing for Modificata – it has received a handful of updates over the previous Portofino model, which aim to give you a better driving experience in all types of situations. The 3.9L V8 now produces 612bhp, slightly more powerful than the standard Portofino at 592bhp. This gets the car off the line slightly quicker, taking the Portofino M from 0-62mph in just 3.45 seconds – not bad for a car that Ferrari claim to be more usable and comfortable than the more hardcore models in their line-up. The seven-speed gearbox of old has been updated to have eight gears to make the driving experience smoother and more relaxed. The highest gear is extended to better suit motorway cruising, whilst the lower gears have been shortened for greater acceleration when needed.
If you are looking for a more spirited drive out of your new Portofino M, then Ferrari have you covered with the addition of Race mode, which was previously missing from the older model. Like the more track-focussed Ferrari’s, Race mode maximises driving pleasure and takes advantage of the Slide Slip Control technology, giving you more control whilst keeping the car firmly on the road. However, the Portofino M, whilst having immense power and ability, is not made to be thrashed round a track. Stick the car in comfort mode and the suspension softens up, allowing you to enjoy a peaceful cruise without the harsh bumps and scuttles of a usual supercar. The ride is so refined and compliant, bettered further still by the optional Magneride Dual Mode Suspension, which makes the Portofino a comfortable drive over rough B roads.
Overall, the new Portofino M offers all the thrills and sound of a convertible Ferrari with great practicality and everyday usability.
