Lotus' story has been filled with close calls with bankruptcy, questionable decision making and an array of special editions of the same model - marketed as a completely different product. The simple reason for this is money, and more specifically, specialising in a product that just doesn't quite fit the demands of modern motorists - or so we thought…. Cue the Emira.
The Emira is the latest sports car to emerge from Lotus, and the last of their petrol-powered production cars. Described as “a mini-Ferrari”, the Emira is stylish with curves and ducts in all the right places, serving both form and function. The premium theme continues to the interior where the most advancement both technologically and practically have been made. Premium leather and traces of alcantara adorn the interior creating an environment that is comfortable with ample room for the daily commute, but always reminding you that you are piloting a sports car. A large centre screen accompanied by a digital dash, display all the information a driver would require with a user-friendly interface. Wireless Apple CarPlay also comes as a standard option to the Emira.
This particular example is the First Edition which includes many desirable options within the spec. Included in this is a First Edition Exclusive 13-Colour Palette, the Lotus Driver’s Pack, Convenience Pack and KEF Audio system to name a few items.
The V6 sat behind the driver unlocks the ‘Full Lotus Experience’. By selecting the supercharged V6 engine option over the turbocharged 4-cylinder, and the 6-Speed manual gearbox on the configurator, you open yourself up to a driving experience synonymous to the British Automotive Marque based in Norfolk, UK. Gear changes stir emotion with the engine sound encouraging you to push towards the redline before pressing into the far-left pedal, followed by a secure and satisfying gear-change. The manual 6-speed gearbox is perhaps the star feature for the interior, with the exposed gear linkage proudly sat behind a mesh shield. The Emira is a breath of fresh air from Lotus, a much-needed step in the right direction in order to fuel the close of their petrol-powered era.

WHAT THE JOURNALISTS SAY
- There are certainly many good bits, including a fantastic soundtrack from the supercharged V6 engine, which has a properly stirring bark to it from 3,000rpm onwards.
- It pours itself into corners with a linear calmness, settles sweetly and leans on its rear axle, loading the diff and feeling every inch the complete sports car.
- The Emira is a hugely competent sports car with seductive looks, a refined cabin and tenaciously grippy handling.
