Taking more time to say it’s name than it does to hit 0-60, the Mercedes-AMG C63s Edition 1 Motorsport is the ultimate performance road going version of Mercedes’ brilliant coupe. Building on the success of the previous C63, this new generation of the super 2-door C-Class features some profound changes. Gone is the 6.2L engine, replaced by a 4.0 twin-turbo charged “Hot-V” V8 offering substantially higher levels of torque and improved fuel economy to boot. A “Hot-V” configuration means the turbochargers are nestled inside the cylinder banks, giving better packaging options, a lower overall centre of gravity and more power from an engine shared with the AMG GT series.
Extended wheel arches and bodywork bristling with aerodynamic alterations, all hint at the serious performance hardware that lies beneath. The car receives a whole host of AMG extras, highlight examples of which include carbon ceramic brakes, newly developed 12-link rear suspension and a fully variable locking differential. The latter of which, combined with a front end that can be placed with surgical precision, allows for this brute to pull off those infamous tyre smoking slides for which the AMG brand is revered. Leave the traction control on with comfort settings and this car makes a superbly appointed, comfortable grand tourer with ample luggage capacity. Turn it off and flick the car into Race mode and it will happily light up the rear tyres, allowing the driver to explore the full range of available cornering angles in this spectacularly well sorted super coupe.
