In 1972 Mercedes developed a Military vehicle for the German Army called the ‘Geländewagen’, meaning ‘cross country vehicle’, this was then subsequently shortened to G-Wagen or G-Class when it went on sale to the public in 1979. The body structure itself has not changed all that much and thus the G-Wagen has kept its iconic and instantly recognisable retro boxy shape. Arguably tougher and more resilient than the American and the UK equivalents the Jeep and the Land Rover, the G-Wagon shows true off-roading pedigree with it’s low range setting, sequentially locking differentials and long suspension travel. Hand built at its very own production facility at Graz in Austria, each iteration of the G-Wagen must undergo several thousand kilometres of testing on the Austrian ‘Schockl Mountain’ tracks, which are strewn with boulders and tree roots, before it is certified as ‘Schockl Proof’ and fit for series production.
This particular example is an 'Edition 463'. The Mercedes-AMG G63 Edition 463 comes with an incredible 563 bhp, 26 bhp more than standard. Unique exterior features to the Edition 463 include a stainless-steel guard under the engine, 21" AMG alloys in a 5 Twin-Spoke Design and Protective Grilles for the headlamps. Step inside and the Edition 463 exclusively comes with the Carbon Fibre Trim, seats in high quality Designo Leather with Side Bolsters in Carbon Look Leather and Contrasting Topstitching, Driving Assistance Package, Entertainment Package, Winter Package, Door Centre Panels in a Diamond Design and Door Grab Handles in Nappa leather. Overall the 463 Edition advances the G63 in terms of power, luxury and exclusivity.

WHAT THE JOURNALISTS SAY
- "There’s 760Nm of torque which, as we discovered, is enough to spin up all four wheels in damp conditions."
- "Like nothing else on Earth, really. Expect maybe a Defender being rear-ended by a runaway train."
- "The G63 was never lacking power or luxury, which is exactly why Mercedes has given one of its most controversial models more of both."
