The Carrera S has been one of the most popular variants in the current 992 model range with it's rear-wheel drive set up and a 65bhp advantage over the standard Carrera whilst including more features as standard and pushing the envelope for how much performance and sheer driving pleasure can be extracted from four wheels whilst maintaining very strong residuals. With a dizzying amount of technology but losing none of its trademark build quality the 922 Carrera S remains one of the first choices for many Porsche enthusiasts, whether it be as a daily driver or for high days and holidays.
The Cabriolet variant of the 992 Carrera S retains the sharp looks of the coupe despite the 10mm raise at the rear where the roof is stored. Space is by no means sacrificed as boot storage is on par with the coupes, as are the rear seats. The roof retracts in just 12 seconds by virtue of a hydraulic motor, which operates in a quick and quiet manner. The whole process then becomes less of a waiting game and more of an appreciation of the engine sound that suddenly fills and dramatises the cabin thanks to the two super responsive turbos and the unique tone of the Porsche 3.0L flat-six. The roof lining was redesigned for the 992 generation to incorporate a sound insulating layer that reduces wind noise at higher speeds and in an additional effort to increase cabin comfort, an automatic wind deflector is deployed when the roof is down to reduce any ‘buffeting’ effect.
Overall, the 992 Carrera S Cabriolet is an excellent proposition for the 911 enthusiast who likes to enjoy the open air thrills in a slightly more modest way than perhaps the likes of the Turbo S and the GT cars. Whilst there is plenty of performance and tech to keep excitement levels high, it's the usability that Carrera S owners tend to appreciate.
